Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling: The Cold-Freezer, Warm-Fridge Riddle Solved

Whirlpool refrigerator repair — Adam & Sam Brothers Repair, North Seattle Metro

The most common Whirlpool refrigerator call isn't "everything's warm" — it's the riddle: freezer's fine, fridge is warm. Owners assume dying compressor; the actual answer is almost always one of three modest parts, because of how Whirlpool moves cold around. Here's the decision tree we run in kitchens from Bothell to Brier.

How the cold travels (30-second version)

On most Whirlpool top-freezer, side-by-side and French-door models, one evaporator coil in the freezer makes all the cold; a fan blows that air through a duct into the fridge section, metered by a damper. Fridge warm + freezer cold therefore means the cold exists but isn't arriving — a delivery failure, not a production failure.

Suspect 1: the evaporator fan

Open the freezer, hold the door switch, and listen: you should hear the fan. Silence — or a strained, chirping whine that stops when frost binds the blades — and you've likely found it. A dead evap fan warms the fridge within hours while the freezer coasts. It's a standard-cost part and a same-visit fix.

Suspect 2: the defrost system

Whirlpool coils defrost themselves on a schedule via a heater and a terminating thermostat, managed on many models by an adaptive defrost board. When any link fails, frost accretes on the coil for a week or two until it's a solid ice block: airflow chokes, the fridge warms first, the freezer follows. The tell: panels off, coil looks like a glacier. The fix is the failed link — heater, thermostat or board — plus a full manual defrost. (If your fridge "fixes itself" after being unplugged over a weekend and fails again two weeks later, this is your paragraph.)

Suspect 3: the damper

The motorized damper that admits cold air to the fridge can stick shut (warm fridge) or open (frozen lettuce). It's audible on some models as a soft motor whir when temps are adjusted; a meter and a look confirm it.

When everything's warm instead

Both compartments warm shifts suspicion to the condenser side: a stalled condenser fan by the compressor (unit runs hot, cycles on overload — sometimes with an audible click every few minutes), coils matted with pet hair, or genuinely the compressor/start relay. That clicking relay is a famous cheap fix; the compressor itself is the last conclusion, reached by measurement, not fear.

The food-clock reality

A fridge section drifting past 40°F puts a timer on everything inside, which is why we run cooling calls same-day whenever humanly possible. Fixed quote after the meter and the frost pattern testify — and fans, defrost parts and relays for common Whirlpool platforms live in the van.
