When the November 2024 bomb cyclone left more than 400,000 Puget Sound Energy customers in the dark, Kenmore was on that utility's lines, and washer calls after storms like that follow a pattern. Machines that were mid-cycle when the power dropped come back with blank displays, locked doors or codes that will not clear. Some really do have a damaged board. Many do not: a tripped GFCI outlet, a door lock stuck in the closed position, or a control that only needed a proper power reset. Telling those cases apart is the first job on a Kenmore washer call, and it is why we test before we quote.
The other thing that makes this city a little unusual for us is its name. Plenty of houses in Inglewood, Arrowhead and the Moorlands still run a Kenmore-brand washer, and the badge on the front says nothing about who built it. The model number does, and it tells us which parts to load. We cover the whole city from our Mountlake Terrace shop, write the price before any work, and carry the locks, pumps and valves that fail most. The seaplane harbor, Saint Edward State Park and the Burke-Gilman Trail give the city its lakeside feel, but the laundry rooms are ordinary suburban ones, and so are most of the faults we find in them once the storm-related ones are ruled out.
Kenmore washer faults, from storm damage to plain wear
Display stays blank after the power returns
- Likely cause
- Tripped GFCI, blown line fuse, or a board hit by a surge
- What we do
- Check the outlet, then the fuse, then the board, in that order
Door stays shut on wet clothes after an outage
- Likely cause
- Lock latched with no power to release it, or a lock that has failed
- What we do
- Open the door safely, test the lock, renew it if it no longer cycles
Same code appears every cycle since the storm
- Likely cause
- Damaged sensor, harness or main control board
- What we do
- Read the code history and test the circuit it names before quoting
Kenmore front-loader drains slowly
- Likely cause
- Pump or trap clogged, just as on the LG or Whirlpool it was built from
- What we do
- Clear the trap, test the pump, use the original maker's part
Older Kenmore top-loader hums but will not agitate
- Likely cause
- Broken motor coupler on a Whirlpool-built direct-drive model
- What we do
- Install a new coupler and check the drive for other wear
Machine resets itself or freezes mid-cycle
- Likely cause
- Loose connector or a board with heat damage
- What we do
- Reseat and inspect the connectors before replacing any electronics
Outages, model numbers and Kenmore laundry rooms
Kenmore buys its electricity from Puget Sound Energy, and the lines along SR 522 and up the wooded slopes of Uplake Terrace and Kenlake Vista go down in the big windstorms. The moment power comes back can be harder on electronics than the outage itself. A simple habit helps: when the lights go out in a storm, unplug the washer or switch off its breaker, then wait a few minutes after the power is steady before turning it back on. It costs nothing and protects a control board that is expensive to replace. A surge protector rated for appliances adds another layer, though it does not replace switching the machine off while the grid is unstable.
On Kenmore-badged washers, the first three digits of the model number name the real maker. Models beginning with 110 were built by Whirlpool, front-loaders beginning with 796 were built by LG, and units starting with 417 came from Electrolux, the company behind Frigidaire. Read us the tag, found inside the lid or around the door opening, when you call or book online, and we will match the parts before we leave the shop. A Whirlpool-built Kenmore top-loader from the 1990s often takes the same coupler and lid switch as its Whirlpool twin, which makes it one of the easier machines to keep running.
Kenmore's housing runs from the 1950s plats of Inglewood and Uplake to condos along Bothell Way NE, where about one home in eight sits in a mid-size building of 20 to 49 units. Water comes from the Northshore Utility District, which supplies Seattle's Tolt River water and keeps scale out of the picture. That leaves electronics, locks and normal wear as the main reasons Kenmore washers stop working.

Starting prices for washer repair in Kenmore

We test before naming a board, and the figure you approve is the one on the estimate written after the diagnostic. Is a storm-damaged washer worth fixing?
If a washer seems fine after a storm but starts throwing odd codes weeks later, have it checked before the board fails, because a loose connector needs no new part and a board is a costly one. Otherwise, it depends on what the surge reached. If the damage stopped at a fuse, a lock or the GFCI, the repair is small and the washer is as good as before. If the main board failed, the answer turns on the machine's age and whether that board is still made: on a five-year-old LG or Whirlpool, a new board is usually a sensible fix, while on a twelve-year-old washer whose board has been discontinued, replacement makes more sense. A washer that took a surge to both its control board and its motor control unit is rarely worth saving. For Kenmore-brand machines, parts follow the original maker, so a Whirlpool-built Kenmore is often easier to keep going than its age suggests. We confirm the part is available before quoting, so you are not paying for a repair that stalls on a back-order.
Common questions
My washer has been dead since the power came back. Is it ruined?
Not necessarily. Check the breaker and press the reset button on any GFCI outlet in the laundry area. If the display stays dark, the cause may be a blown line fuse, a door switch or the control board. We test them in that order, so the repair goes to the part that actually failed.
I have a Kenmore washer. Who made it?
The model number tells us. Numbers beginning with 110 are Whirlpool-built, 796 are LG-built front-loaders, and 417 are Electrolux-built. Give that number when you call (425) 570-9520 or put it in the booking form, and we will bring parts that match the real maker, which often means the repair finishes on the first visit.
Should I unplug the washer during a windstorm?
It is a good habit. Surges and brownouts when power is restored are hard on control boards. If the power goes out, unplug the washer or turn off its breaker, and plug it back in a few minutes after the lights are steady. The same goes for the dryer and dishwasher.
The door is locked with wet clothes inside. Can I force it?
Please do not. Forcing a locked door can break the lock, the handle and sometimes the hinge. Switch off the breaker or unplug the washer for several minutes, which releases many locks. If it stays shut, the lock has probably failed, and we can open it safely and replace it.
Do you serve the condos along Bothell Way NE?
Yes. We work in the condo and apartment buildings along SR 522 as well as in the houses up the hill. If your unit has a stacked pair in a closet, mention it when you book so the technician comes ready to separate it, and let us know about any building rules for contractors.
