The first homes in Mountlake Terrace, put up from 1949 on a former wartime airfield, were compact block houses meant for veterans and their young families. Whoever drew them was not picturing a 27-inch dryer with a 4-inch exhaust. The laundry ended up wherever a later owner found room: a closed-in back porch, a converted carport, a corner of the garage. Cutting a fresh vent hole through block is slow work, so a lot of those dryers exhaust the long way, under the floor through the crawlspace or up into the attic, and that long run is where most of our local dryer calls begin.

Newer Mountlake Terrace is a different animal. Around Town Center and the light rail station, mid-rise apartments and condos keep opening, and their laundry closets hold stacked or compact pairs with ducts buried inside the walls. Both kinds of home are a short hop from our shop, so we can usually fit a Mountlake Terrace dryer in the same day, Monday through Saturday, as long as your call lands in the morning. Common parts ride on the van, which means a dead dryer is often tumbling hot towels again before we pack up.

Mountlake Terrace dryer trouble, symptom by symptom

  • Drum turns, but the air stays cool on an electric model

    Likely cause
Open thermal fuse or a broken coil in the heating element
    What we do
Meter the fuse, element and high-limit, then find out why the fuse went before replacing it
  • Scorch smell at the back and only partial heat

    Likely cause
Burned terminal block or a loose lug on an older three-wire cord
    What we do
Replace the block and cord, tighten the lugs properly and point out any heat marks at the outlet
  • Clothes come out hot but still damp after an hour

    Likely cause
Lint packed into a long crawlspace or attic duct, or a crushed foil hose
    What we do
Test airflow at the outside hood, clean the run, swap foil for semi-rigid metal
  • A thump that speeds up as the drum gets going

    Likely cause
Flat-spotted drum rollers or a worn idler pulley
    What we do
Replace rollers and idler together and check the belt for cracks
  • Shuts off mid-cycle, starts again once it cools

    Likely cause
Motor overheating on a lint-matted blower wheel, or a drifting cycling thermostat
    What we do
Clean out the blower housing and test both thermostats under load
  • Stacked Town Center unit lights up but won't start

    Likely cause
Door switch, start switch or belt switch in the start circuit
    What we do
Slide the pair out on floor protectors and test each switch in turn

Cinderblock ramblers, crawlspace ducts and Town Center stacks

In the post-war houses around Cedar Terrace, Melody Hill and Cascade View, the trouble usually isn't the dryer at first. A duct that snakes 25 or 30 feet under the floor, with three or four elbows, slows the exhaust until lint settles in every low spot. The dryer runs hotter, the high-limit thermostat starts clicking off and on, and sooner or later the thermal fuse opens. Swapping the fuse alone just restarts the countdown. We measure airflow at the outside hood, and when the run is the culprit we clean it or sketch out a shorter, smoother path before closing the dryer back up.

Weather adds to it. Mountlake Terrace sits in the Convergence Zone band where showers stall between Everett and Northgate, so the air around Lake Ballinger and Terrace Creek Park stays damp for long stretches. Damp lint is sticky lint: it coats the duct wall instead of blowing through, and in a cold crawlspace the warm exhaust condenses and turns that coating into paste. Dryers parked in an unheated garage do the same thing. A run that cleared easily three years ago can be half-closed today without anyone touching it.

In the newer Town Center buildings the challenge is access. A stacked pair in a hallway closet has to come out without gouging the flooring or kinking the water line, and the duct connection behind it is often a tight periscope fitting. We bring sliders, take our time on the reconnection, and check that the periscope isn't pinched, because a flattened one puts the dryer right back where it started. Renters in those buildings are welcome to book directly; the written quote can go to the property manager before anything is replaced.

Starting prices for Mountlake Terrace dryer work

Dryer work in Mountlake Terrace starts at $235. Heating elements in electric dryers, blown thermal fuses, worn cycling thermostats and full vent cleanings make up most of it. Read that as the floor for dryer repairs in this area, not a promise about your machine; the exact price goes into the written estimate once the $85 diagnostic is done, and if you approve the job, that diagnostic is folded into it. Being next door earns no surcharge, and neither does living at the far edge of our map.

Is an older electric dryer worth fixing here?

An electric dryer is a plain machine: a drum, a belt, a motor, a blower and a heating coil. Nearly every piece can be replaced, and few of them cost much. For the 10- to 15-year-old dial-control dryers we find in Mountlake Terrace ramblers, repair usually wins as long as the drum isn't rusting through and the motor still turns without dragging. Replacing starts to make more sense when a newer electronic model needs a control board plus another major part, or when you're reworking a cramped laundry corner and want a stacked or ventless unit that frees up floor space. One caution: if the real problem is a 30-foot crawlspace duct, a brand-new dryer will choke on it exactly like the old one. We sort out the airflow question first, then give you written numbers for both paths so the choice is yours, not ours.

Common questions

How quickly can you get to a dryer in Mountlake Terrace?

Most often on the day you get in touch, Monday through Saturday, provided the call comes in early. Our shop is one to three minutes from nearly every address in the city, so a technician can usually slot you between other jobs. If the dryer is in a Town Center building, mention parking and any gate or door code when you book.

My old dryer has a three-prong cord and the outlet is four-prong. Can you sort that out?

Yes. We fit the right cord and set up the terminal block and ground strap to match, which comes up often when a dryer moves into a newer unit. We never force a mismatched plug. If the outlet itself shows heat damage or the circuit looks wrong, we say so and suggest an electrician for that piece.

The dryer smells hot but still runs. Should I keep using it?

Better to stop until someone looks. A hot or scorched smell usually means lint is collecting near the heat source or the exhaust is blocked, and the safety thermostats are working harder than they should. Empty the lint screen and check that the breaker is fully on, then leave the rest to us. We'll find where the airflow is failing.

Do you clean the vent, or only fix the dryer?

Both. Most slow-drying and fuse-blowing calls in Mountlake Terrace trace back to the exhaust run, so we test airflow on every visit. If the run needs it, we clean from the dryer to the outside hood and tell you about any crushed, loose or foil sections we find. Vent cleaning goes on the same written estimate as any other dryer work.

Can you look at my washer on the same trip?

Yes. A washer that leaves clothes soggy often gets a dryer blamed for its spin problem. When we check a second appliance during the same visit, that diagnostic costs $10 less. Each machine still gets its own written price before anything is taken apart, and you decide on each one separately.
