GE Dryer Grinding or Drum Not Turning? Meet the Rear Bearing GE Built Differently
GE dryers hang the drum on a rear bearing and front slides, unlike roller-based brands. What the grinding means, the bearing kit fix, and belt checks on GE.

More than half of Lynnwood lives in apartments, condos or townhomes, where the dryer hides in a closet far from any outside wall. We repair stacked and full-size dryers, gas or electric, six to eight minutes from our Mountlake Terrace shop.
Lynnwood grew fast and in layers. Its population more than doubled in the 1960s, the Alderwood Mall opening in 1979 set off another building wave, and since 2015 apartments have risen around the convention center and the City Center light rail station. Each layer put the laundry somewhere different, and where the laundry landed decides how a dryer ages and what tends to break first. A 1960s split-level off 196th Street SW usually has it on the lower floor near an outside wall. A recent apartment tucks it into a hallway closet and sends the exhaust through the ceiling to a hood on the far side of the building.
That second arrangement is now the common one: only about 45% of Lynnwood homes are detached houses. So a big share of our Lynnwood dryer work involves stacked laundry centers, compact 24-inch pairs and hidden ducts the person living with them has never seen. We handle all of it, gas and electric, and the price is written down before we start, which makes it simple to forward to a landlord or HOA when they sign off on repairs.
In the newer buildings near City Center and along 44th Ave W, dryer ducts often travel 20 feet or more through a ceiling before they reach daylight. Residents can't see them, building maintenance rarely checks them, and lint keeps piling up until the dryer starts tripping its own safeties. When we're called to one of these units we clean from the dryer back as far as we can safely reach, measure what comes out at the exterior hood, and write down where the restriction sits. If it's inside a shared shaft or behind a rated wall, you get a clear note to pass on to management instead of a guess.
Martha Lake and North Lynnwood are a different story: roughly half their homes were built after 2000, many as two-story houses with the laundry room upstairs. Those dryers usually vent through the floor joists to the rim board, a run with a long horizontal stretch where lint and condensation settle. Families there run big loads every day, so drum rollers, idlers and belts wear sooner than the age of the dryer would suggest. Alderwood Manor, once a district of small poultry farms, is now a mix of older ramblers and newer infill, and we see a bit of everything there.
Lynnwood sits squarely in the Convergence Zone, so a clothesline is a summer-only option and the dryer carries the load the rest of the year. More hours of run time means the slow problems, a sagging duct, a tired belt, show up sooner here than in drier climates. A dryer that still runs but needs an extra 30 minutes per load is telling you something, and catching it at that stage usually means a cleaning or a single part instead of a scorched fuse and a pile of wet towels.

Lynnwood dryer repair starts at $235, whether the machine is stacked in a closet or full-size in a garage. New drum rollers with the idler, control boards and vent cleaning are the work we do most here. That is the lowest starting point across the service area, not a quote: the figure for your dryer, in your particular closet, is written up after the diagnostic. Say yes and the $85 diagnostic becomes part of the repair rather than a separate charge. Stacked units that need extra hands or a long pull from a tight closet are priced the same way, on that written estimate, before any work starts.
Starting prices for the north Seattle area, 2026. The $85 diagnostic is included in any repair you approve, and the exact price is in the written estimate before work starts.
Stacked laundry centers change the math. On a unitized model the washer and dryer share one cabinet, so replacing a failed dryer half means buying a whole new pair, hauling it up stairs and fitting it into a closet built around the old dimensions. That makes most belt, roller, element and switch repairs clearly worth doing. The harder call is a board failure on a model past about 12 years, especially if the washer section is also leaking or noisy; then replacement starts to compete, and we'll tell you so. For separate full-size pairs in Lynnwood houses, the usual guide holds: if the drum, motor and cabinet are sound and the written price sits well below the price of a new dryer, fix it. If you rent, we put both options in writing so your landlord can decide quickly, and we never order a part until someone with the authority to approve it has said yes.
Either works. If you book, we diagnose, write the price and can phone your property manager or landlord to walk them through that quote before any repair starts. Many owners prefer that, because they hear exactly what failed and what it costs. Just let us know who is paying when you call or fill in the form.
We clean from the back of your dryer through every section we can safely reach and measure airflow at the outside hood. Some buildings route ducts into shared shafts or up to the roof, which belongs to building maintenance. In that case we note where the blockage is so management can reach it from their side.
Yes. The dryer half of a laundry center has its own belt, rollers, heating parts and switches, and we repair them without touching the washer. We do need room to slide the unit forward out of its closet, so clearing the hallway beforehand saves time. If the washer half also needs attention, it can be checked on the same trip.
We do. Martha Lake sits roughly 11 to 14 minutes up the road from us and Alderwood Manor 10 to 13, so both are scheduled exactly like central Lynnwood, same-day visits for early requests included. North Lynnwood and Meadowdale addresses are covered as well.
That usually means exhaust air isn't leaving the building fast enough, or a duct joint inside the wall has separated and is venting into the closet. Either way the dryer works harder, and moisture builds up behind the drywall. Keep the lint screen clean and call us; we'll find out where the air is escaping.
