Mukilteo dryer repair, Harbour Pointe to Old Town

Mukilteo runs from Harbour Pointe's planned streets down to the bluffs above the ferry. Our technicians repair gas and electric dryers in both, roughly 16 to 20 minutes from our shop to Harbour Pointe and 24 to 30 to Old Town.

Much of Mukilteo is younger than people expect. Growth picked up after Boeing opened its plant next door in 1967, and the Harbour Pointe planned community, started in 1978 and annexed in 1991, about doubled the city before it filled out around 2000. Roughly half of today's homes date from 1980 to 1999. Harbour Pointe mixes detached houses with townhomes and condos along Harbour Pointe Boulevard, and plenty of them put the laundry in an interior closet or an upstairs hallway rather than on an outside wall, which means long, hidden dryer ducts.

Old Town is the other end of the city in every sense: older houses on the bluff around Lighthouse Park and the ferry landing, facing Possession Sound and whatever wind comes up it. Picnic Point, just south and inside the Mukilteo School District, adds 1960s and 1970s houses with lower-floor laundries. Work schedules tied to Paine Field and the Boeing plant mean many dryers here run at odd hours, so a squealing drum or a cycle that never ends gets noticed fast, and usually by someone trying to sleep.

Mukilteo dryer clues and where they lead

  • Cold draft from the dryer while it's off

    Likely cause
Hood flap on a windward bluff wall stuck open
    What we do
Fit a heavier, wind-resistant hood and reseal the duct
  • Water spots or rust marks inside the drum after storms

    Likely cause
Wind-driven rain entering the vent and running back
    What we do
Correct the duct slope and the hood angle
  • Damp clothes after a full cycle in a Harbour Pointe townhome

    Likely cause
Long interior duct packed with lint
    What we do
Measure, clean and note any section we can't reach
  • Gas dryer heats on the first load only

    Likely cause
    Valve coils weakening once warm
    What we do
Replace the coil set and verify a steady flame
  • A squeak loud enough to wake a night-shift sleeper

    Likely cause
Dry idler pulley or worn drum glides
    What we do
New idler pulley and glide pads, plus a belt check
  • Light comes on, but the dryer won't start

    Likely cause
Door switch or start switch failure
    What we do
Test both and replace the failed switch

Bluff winds, Harbour Pointe closets and plant schedules

On the bluffs around Old Town and Chennault Beach, wind is the dryer vent's main enemy. A gust off Possession Sound can hold a lightweight flap open for hours, letting cold, wet air pour back into the duct, and a storm can drive rain straight into a hood that faces the water. That moisture mats lint in the first elbow and, in bad cases, drips back toward the dryer. Salt air finishes the job on thin aluminum hoods, pitting them until the hinge pin seizes. Homes tucked into Japanese Gulch or set back from the bluff edge have it easier, but even there the prevailing wind finds a hood mounted on the wrong wall. We replace them with heavier, weighted designs, angle the duct to drain outward and check the seal where the duct meets the wall.

Harbour Pointe and Olympus Terrace present a quieter problem. Homes from the 1980s and 1990s, many of them townhomes, often run the dryer duct two dozen feet or so through a ceiling or floor before it exits. Families here wash constantly, Kamiak-age kids included, so lint builds faster than anyone expects. Gas is common too, with about 53% of Mukilteo homes heating with it, so a good share of these dryers burn gas and fail at the igniter or valve coils. The other common failure here is the thermal fuse on electric models, which opens when that long hidden duct has finally slowed the exhaust enough. We replace the fuse, but only after we've found and cleared the restriction that blew it, because a new fuse in front of an old clog lasts weeks, not years.

Picnic Point and the houses along Beverly Park Road and the Speedway corridor sit in between: older, mostly single-family homes with laundries on a lower level or off the garage. We reach them in about 15 to 19 minutes, and Old Town takes a little longer. Shift workers can tell us when someone is sleeping; the technician will call your cell from the driveway rather than ring the bell.

What Mukilteo dryer repairs start at

Dryer repair in Mukilteo starts at $235. Full vent cleanings, sometimes with a new hood on the same visit, lead the list here, followed by gas igniters or valve coil sets and roller, idler and belt jobs. Treat that as an area-wide floor, not a quote. The $85 diagnostic settles which part has failed, the written price comes before any work, and it already includes the diagnostic once you approve.

Repair, replace or rethink the vent?

For most Mukilteo dryers the machine itself is worth repairing: Harbour Pointe homes have usually replaced their original build-out dryers once already, so today's units are often under 12 years old, with plenty of life after a new igniter, belt or set of rollers. The bigger question on the bluff is the vent. If a windward hood keeps failing, or the duct takes on rain every winter, that problem will follow any dryer you buy. When a household is replacing a dryer anyway and the vent location is the chronic issue, a ventless heat-pump dryer is worth considering, since it has no exterior hood at all, though it dries more slowly and needs its filters cleaned often. In townhome closets, also check the new dryer's dimensions before ordering. We'll give you the repair price in writing first, so you can compare it fairly, and if the dryer is sound, we'll say so even when a new machine would be easier for everyone.

Common questions

Wind keeps blowing my dryer vent flap open. What can be done?

A heavier hood with a weighted or spring-assisted flap holds up much better on a windward wall. Some homes also benefit from rerouting the duct to a more sheltered side. We check the hood, the duct slope and the wall seal, then recommend the simplest fix that will last.

Is Old Town farther for you than Harbour Pointe?

Yes, by about ten minutes. Harbour Pointe takes us roughly 16 to 20 minutes outside rush hour; Old Town, around 24 to 30. Both are in our regular area, both get same-day visits when you reach us early in the day, and neither carries a distance surcharge.

Can you work around a night-shift sleeper?

Tell us when you book. The technician can phone you from the curb instead of knocking, and we'll explain beforehand if any step involves noise, such as pulling the dryer out or running a test cycle. Many Mukilteo households work Paine Field and Boeing shifts, so this request is familiar to us.

Do you cover Picnic Point?

Yes. Picnic Point is about 15 to 19 minutes from our shop off-peak, and we serve it just like Mukilteo proper. Many homes there date from the 1960s and 1970s and keep the laundry on a lower floor, so we pay attention to the vent rise and the hood when we visit.

Would a ventless dryer make sense for my home?

It can, mainly when the vent location keeps causing trouble or there's no good exterior wall. Ventless heat-pump dryers use less energy and need no hood, but they run longer cycles and need regular filter cleaning. If your current dryer is repairable, we'll tell you that first.
