Brier dryer repair, with a close eye on gas models

Brier heats with gas far more than its neighbors, and plenty of its 1980s houses run a gas dryer off the same line. We fix gas and electric dryers anywhere in town, seven to nine minutes from our shop.

Brier incorporated in 1965 largely to stay its own place, and it has kept that character: zoning for single-family homes only, a 12,500 square foot minimum lot, one store and one restaurant, no state highway running through. Ranch houses went up in the 1950s and 1960s, but most of the town was built between the 1970s and the 1990s, with more than a third of all homes dating from the 1980s alone. Those are big houses on wooded lots, often with a laundry room off the garage and a family's worth of towels going through it every day.

The detail that shapes our Brier dryer work is gas. Around 65% of homes here heat with natural gas, compared with roughly a third in Lynnwood next door, and where the gas line already runs to the furnace and water heater, the dryer is often on it too. Gas dryers fail in their own ways, through igniters, valve coils and flame sensors, and we carry those parts on the van along with the electric ones. Electric dryers are still common here too, especially in the older ranch houses, so whatever you have, we come ready for it.

Gas and electric dryer problems we see on Brier calls

  • Heats for a few minutes, then blows cold

    Likely cause
Gas valve coils weakening once they warm up
    What we do
Watch the burner cycle, test coil resistance hot and cold, replace the coil set
  • Igniter never glows and there's no flame

    Likely cause
Cracked igniter, open flame sensor or a blown thermal fuse
    What we do
Test each part in sequence and fit the failed one from van stock
  • Igniter glows but the burner never lights

    Likely cause
Tired valve coils or the dryer's gas supply valve partly closed
    What we do
Confirm supply, then check coil response under power
  • Damp loads and a hood full of fir needles

    Likely cause
Exterior cap packed with needles, leaves or a spring nest
    What we do
Clear the hood and the run, fit a hood that resists nesting
  • Rhythmic thump on big loads

    Likely cause
Rollers flattened by years of family-size wash days
    What we do
Replace rollers, idler and belt together
  • A gas smell near the dryer

    Likely cause
    A leaking connector or fitting
    What we do
Leave the house first and call PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 from outside; we repair after it is made safe

Big lots, tall firs and gas lines in Brier

Brier's trees are the reason people live here, and they're also hard on dryer vents. On ranch houses and daylight lots the exhaust often leaves the house a foot or two above grade, behind shrubs and beside a bark-mulch bed. Fir needles, maple leaves and windblown debris collect against the hood, a damp mat forms over the flap, and the dryer starts taking twice as long. In spring, small birds find a warm opening and build inside it. A quick look at the hood every fall saves a lot of trouble, and when we visit we clear it and, where it helps, fit a cap that resists both debris and nesting.

Many 1980s Brier homes send the dryer duct across the garage ceiling to an outside wall. That stretch sits in unheated air all winter, so warm, wet exhaust cools and drips inside the pipe, and lint sticks to the wet spots. The dryer itself may be on its third replacement while the duct is the original from construction, sometimes with foil sections that have sagged into low pockets. We test airflow, find those pockets and give you the option to clean or rebuild that run. Rebuilding with rigid metal, sloped slightly toward the outside, usually ends the drip for good and lets the dryer finish a load of towels in one cycle again.

Getting here is easy from our shop: a few minutes along 228th or 236th St SW, no freeway needed. Addresses in Alderwood Manor that carry a Brier mailing address are covered the same way. Because the drive is short and quiet, a Brier call rarely depends on freeway traffic, which helps when you need the dryer back before the next school or sports week begins.

Starting prices for dryer repair in Brier

Dryer repair in Brier starts at $235. For gas dryers, igniters and valve coils are a frequent fix; drum rollers with the idler and belt come up often too, along with clearing the vent run out to the hood. That figure is where the price begins across the area we serve, not a quote. Your own number depends on the model and what the $85 diagnostic turns up, you see it in writing before we pick up a tool, and the diagnostic is absorbed into any repair you approve.

Keeping a gas dryer versus buying new

Gas dryers tend to age well. The burner assembly is simple, the igniter and valve coils are inexpensive, and the drum, motor and blower are the same sturdy parts found in the electric version. A 12- or 15-year-old gas dryer in a Brier laundry room is usually worth repairing unless rust has reached the drum, the motor is seizing, or two big repairs are stacking up at once. Replacement brings its own costs: a new gas connector, a leak check, often a new duct transition, and the hassle of moving a heavy machine through a garage. If you do replace, it's worth weighing whether to stay with gas, since the line is already there and gas dryers often finish loads faster than electric ones. We give you the repair price in writing and an honest read on the machine's remaining life so you can compare. If you'd like, we also look at the washer while we're there, since a slow spin can make a healthy dryer seem weak.

Common questions

Can I work on my gas dryer myself?

Keep homeowner checks to the lint screen, the breaker and making sure the dryer is plugged in. Anything involving the burner, gas valve or connector belongs with a technician, because a loose fitting can leak. A gas smell at any point means everyone out of the house; phone PSE on 1-888-225-5773 or dial 911 once you're outside, and call us after that.

Why does my gas dryer heat at first and then stop?

Most often the valve coils. They open the gas valve when cold, then weaken as they heat up, so the burner lights once and won't relight. The igniter glows, nothing happens, and the drum fills with cool air. We test the coils at operating temperature and replace them as a set, usually from parts on the van.

Do you take calls from Brier addresses outside city limits?

Yes. Some Alderwood Manor homes use a Brier mailing address, and we cover those exactly like homes inside town. From the shop, most of Brier is a seven-to-nine-minute drive, and a call before late morning generally gets a technician out that same day, Monday to Saturday.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned on a wooded lot?

It depends on the run and the trees around it, so we'd rather measure than guess. Short runs on open walls can go years. Long garage-ceiling runs with a hood behind shrubs may need attention every year or two. Watching the outside cap each fall, and calling when debris starts to pile up, makes a real difference in between.

Should my next dryer be gas or electric?

If a gas line is already at the laundry, gas usually dries faster and costs less to run in our region. Electric makes sense when there's no line, when you're moving the laundry, or if you'd like a ventless heat-pump model. We can talk through your setup when we visit, without any sales pitch attached.
