Keeping older dryers running in Lake Forest Park

Lake Forest Park's houses are older than most in our area, and their owners tend to stay loyal to the dryer they already have. We repair gas and electric machines, old dial models included, a short run down Ballinger Way from our shop.

When Ole Hanson platted this hillside in 1912, he wanted its natural beauty kept, and the place still reads like his plan. Houses sit back among cedars and firs, on slopes that drop toward Lyon Creek, McAleer Creek and Lake Washington. About a third of the housing predates 1960, one home in eight goes back before 1940, and almost four in five homes are single-family. Many of those houses were never planned with a laundry room; the washer and dryer moved into a basement corner, a former porch or a mudroom added decades later.

That history produces a particular kind of dryer call. People here tend to keep things running. We often meet dryers that are 15 or 20 years old, simple dial-and-timer machines without a circuit board in sight, whose owners would rather repair them than send them to a landfill. We're glad to do it. Those machines are easy to work on, their parts are still made, and with a clean vent they dry as well as anything new. Gas or electric, old or recent, the price is in writing before we begin. Gas is common here, with about 53% of homes heating that way, so we arrive ready for igniters and valve coils as well as heating elements.

Signs an older Lake Forest Park dryer needs attention

  • Timed dry runs on and on and never shuts off

    Likely cause
Timer motor no longer advancing on a mechanical control
    What we do
Test the timer motor and contacts, replace the timer if needed
  • Tumbles but stays cold, clothes take all afternoon

    Likely cause
Thermal fuse or cycling thermostat open after years of slow airflow
    What we do
Replace the failed safety and trace the airflow problem behind it
  • Loud thumping or a scraping sound from the drum

    Likely cause
Worn rollers or a frayed felt drum seal on an older model
    What we do
Replace rollers, felt seal and belt as one job
  • Gas model clicks and glows, but no flame

    Likely cause
Weak valve coils or a failing flame sensor
    What we do
Test in order and replace the faulty part
  • Musty smell and moss on the outside hood

    Likely cause
Flap gummed with moss and needles in deep shade
    What we do
Clean or replace the hood and the last section of duct
  • Rust flecks on clean clothes

    Likely cause
Chipped drum coating after years in a humid basement
    What we do
Inspect the drum and advise plainly on repair or replacement

Ravine lots, creek damp and long-lived machines

Shade and water define this town. Under a tall canopy, a dryer hood on the north side of a house may not see direct sun from October to May, and moss happily grows across the flap. Lots that slope toward Lyon or McAleer Creek often have daylight basements where the laundry sits below grade, so the vent rises before it exits and the soil outside stays wet all winter. We find hoods gummed shut, ducts sweating in cold crawlspaces and, now and then, a transition hose that slipped off its collar years ago and has been blowing lint and moisture into the basement ever since.

Lake Forest Park also catches its share of Convergence Zone showers, which keeps the air damp around Horizon View and Sheridan Beach for much of the year. Drying clothes outdoors is a short-season luxury here, so the dryer carries most of the load, and minor airflow restrictions add up to real wear. On older mechanical dryers that wear shows up first as tired rollers, a stretched belt and a thermal fuse that finally gives out after years of running a little too hot. We'd much rather catch those at the slow-drying stage, when a cleaning and a set of rollers will carry the machine for years, than after the fuse has gone and the household is behind on laundry.

Getting to you is quick: Ballinger Way from the Mountlake Terrace side, then along SR 522 past Town Center. Steep driveways and narrow lanes are no problem for us. Just mention it if parking is tight, so the technician knows where to leave the van, and whether the dryer will need to come out through a side door or up a basement stair.

Starting prices for Lake Forest Park dryer repairs

Dryer repair in Lake Forest Park starts at $235. On the older machines here, rebuilding the drum supports with new rollers, an idler pulley and a belt is routine, as are blown thermal fuses, faulty thermostats and, on gas models, igniters or valve coils. That price is an entry point across our whole service area, not a quote. The $85 diagnostic produces the actual figure for your machine, written out before any work, and it rolls into the repair price once you approve.

When an old dryer still earns its keep

For the older dryers common in Lake Forest Park, the honest answer is usually repair. A dial-control Whirlpool-built, Maytag or GE dryer from the early 2000s has a short list of wear parts, all still manufactured, and almost none of them is expensive. Its biggest weakness is the vent, not the machine. We start leaning toward replacement in three situations: a drum shedding rust onto clothes, a motor failing at the same time as a bearing or drum support, or a dryer so far out of production that the needed part has become hard to find. Newer electronic dryers deserve a closer look, since a control board on a ten-year-old model can approach the cost of a modest new machine. In every case you get the repair price in writing and our plain view of how much life the dryer has left.

Common questions

Is it worth repairing a 20-year-old dryer?

Often, yes, if it's a simple mechanical model whose drum and motor are still healthy. Belts, rollers, fuses, thermostats and elements are inexpensive, and these machines can run many more years. We'll tell you if the drum is rusting or the motor is near the end, because at that point the repair stops making sense.

My dryer won't stop running on timed dry. What's wrong?

On a mechanical control, the timer has a small motor that turns the dial. When it fails, the dial stays put and the cycle never ends. A worn contact inside the timer can do the same. We test both and replace the timer if needed. Until then, keep cleaning the lint screen and end cycles by hand.

Do you cover all of Lake Forest Park, including Horizon View and Sheridan Beach?

Yes, every part of town, from the Horizon View hilltop down to Sheridan Beach and the lakeshore, plus homes along Ballinger Way and SR 522. Plan on eight to eleven minutes of travel for us at quiet times; reach us early in the day, Monday through Saturday, and we can usually come the same day.

Why does my basement smell musty when the dryer runs?

Usually a duct joint has come apart or the transition hose has slipped off, and warm, moist air is escaping indoors. In a damp basement that moisture feeds mildew. A blocked hood pushing air back can cause it too. We trace the leak, reconnect or replace the duct and confirm the air is leaving the house.

Can you look at my old washer on the same visit?

Yes. Older pairs usually came home together and tend to wear out together. If we check the washer on the same trip, its diagnostic costs $10 less, and you get a separate written price for each machine so you can decide on them one at a time.
