Ice maker and water line repair in Mukilteo

Much of Mukilteo went up in Harbour Pointe between 1980 and 2000, and lots of refrigerator water lines from that era are now old enough to crack. We repair the line, the valve or the ice maker, with the price written first.

Harbour Pointe was planned starting in 1978, annexed in March 1991, which roughly doubled Mukilteo, and essentially finished around 2000. Its golf course opened in 1989 and Kamiak High School in 1993, right in the middle of that growth. Census figures put about 49% of the city's homes in the 1980–99 range and another 24% after that. Those kitchens were plumbed for an ice maker from the start, usually with the thin plastic tubing that was standard at the time. Thirty-odd years later, that tubing is often the weakest link in the kitchen. It hardens with age, and every refrigerator swap bends it again where it loops behind the cabinet and drops through the floor.

So a Mukilteo ice maker call often starts with a wet floor rather than an empty bin. A crack on the supply side leaks around the clock and stains or cups the flooring, while a split after the valve only drips when the ice maker fills and tends to build a sheet of ice in the freezer. Elsewhere in town the pattern shifts: Old Town's older houses near the ferry and the lighthouse, and the 1960s and 1970s homes in Picnic Point, have lines added during remodels, often by whoever installed the refrigerator.

Mukilteo ice maker and supply line warning signs

  • Flooring near the fridge stained, cupped or soft

    Likely cause
Aging plastic supply tube cracked behind the refrigerator
    What we do
Shut off the line, replace the tubing back to the shutoff and check for active leaks
  • A drip that appears only while the ice maker fills

    Likely cause
Loose joint on the valve's outlet side or a split fill cup
    What we do
Find the joint that weeps under pressure and replace the tube or fitting
  • A bang or rattle in the wall each time the valve closes

    Likely cause
Water hammer on a loosely secured line
    What we do
Secure the line, check the pressure and replace the valve if it slams
  • No ice since the new refrigerator went in

    Likely cause
Old line reused and kinked, or a cross-threaded compression nut
    What we do
Fit a new line and fittings and test them under pressure
  • Cubes stuck together under a frosty crust

    Likely cause
Freezer door not sealing, letting moist air reach the bin
    What we do
Check the gasket and hinge alignment, then test the defrost system
  • Ice maker clicks through its cycle but never harvests

    Likely cause
Module motor or mold thermostat failing
    What we do
Test the module and put in a new ice maker if it fails

Harbour Pointe, Old Town and Picnic Point

Most Harbour Pointe kitchens are on their second or third refrigerator, but the water line behind it is often original. When we replace a fill valve or ice maker there, we look at that line as well, and if it is brittle we tell you before we push the refrigerator back. Replacing a short line at the same visit costs far less than repairing a floor later. Around Kamiak High School, the golf course and the streets off Harbour Pointe Boulevard, the drive up I-5 and the Mukilteo Speedway takes us about 16–20 minutes off-peak.

Old Town, near the ferry dock and Lighthouse Park, is the farthest part of the city for us at roughly 24–30 minutes, and it costs exactly the same as anywhere else. The Mukilteo–Clinton ferry there is the busiest car route in the state, so we allow extra minutes near the terminal at commute times when we tell you when to expect us. The same goes for Picnic Point, the unincorporated area in the Mukilteo School District where about 41% of homes date from 1960–79. There, refrigerator lines often run through crawl spaces added to in pieces, and we trace them carefully before blaming the appliance. Japanese Gulch, Chennault Beach and Olympus Terrace fill in the middle of town, a mix of eras where we find original lines next to newer braided ones.

With Paine Field and the Boeing plant next door, plenty of Mukilteo households work early or late shifts. The booking form takes the model number and a short description at whatever hour suits you, so we can look up the likely part before we call back to set a time. Water here comes from the Mukilteo Water & Wastewater District, which buys Everett's soft supply through Alderwood, so mineral scale is not what stops ice makers in this city. Power comes from Snohomish County PUD; when a windstorm takes it out, switch the ice maker off until the freezer has recovered, then empty any fused cubes before turning it back on.

Mukilteo ice maker repair: starting prices

Ice maker repair in Mukilteo starts at $295, and a failed water inlet valve or a dead ice maker that needs swapping are the usual finds. Replacing an old supply line behind the fridge depends on its length and route, so it is priced on the estimate after we see it. All of this describes where pricing starts in our area rather than a quote. The $85 diagnostic comes first, then a written figure; approve that figure and the diagnostic is part of it, decline and the $85 is the only charge. If a line has leaked long enough to damage flooring, that repair is outside our work; we note what we saw so you can show it to a flooring contractor or your insurer.

New refrigerator, or fix the one you have?

A leak or a dead ice maker is rarely a reason to replace a refrigerator in Mukilteo, and a new refrigerator does not fix a brittle supply line. If you do replace, replace the line with it. For the repair-or-replace decision itself, look at the refrigerator. Harbour Pointe kitchens with a fridge bought in the last ten years should almost always repair: valves and modules are modest costs. With a fridge in the twelve-to-fifteen-year range, repair still wins if the freezer holds 0°F and the compressor sounds normal. Past fifteen, if the ice maker failure comes with warm spots, frost buildup or a noisy compressor, compare the full repair price with a new unit, which we put side by side on the written estimate. Remember to budget for the floor if a leak has been running for a while; that is often the larger cost.

Common questions

Should I replace the water line when I get a new refrigerator?

Yes, especially in a Harbour Pointe kitchen from the 1980s or 1990s. Old plastic tubing becomes brittle, and moving the refrigerator bends it in exactly the places where it cracks. A new line is a small cost compared with water damage under a floor. If we are already there for a valve or ice maker, we check the line and tell you what condition it is in.

I work shifts near Paine Field. Can I arrange this outside office hours?

Yes. The online booking form accepts the model number from the label and a line about what the ice maker is doing at any hour, and booking that way takes up to $18 off the repair. We phone you back with what it likely is and when we can come. You only need someone home to let us in.

Do you charge more to come to Old Town?

No. There is no distance surcharge anywhere in Mukilteo, including Old Town, which takes us about 24–30 minutes off-peak, and Picnic Point. When you contact us early in the day, Monday to Saturday, a same-day visit is usually possible. All of our technicians can take the call.

How do I shut off water to the refrigerator if the line is leaking?

Look for a small valve under the kitchen sink, behind the refrigerator or in the crawl space below it, and turn it clockwise until it stops. If you cannot find one, close the main shutoff for the house. Then turn the ice maker off, put towels down and call us.

Does Mukilteo water leave buildup in ice makers?

Very little. The Mukilteo Water and Wastewater District buys Everett's Spada Lake water, which averages about 12.5 ppm of hardness, so scale in valves and molds is uncommon. Most problems here come from aging supply lines, worn valves and ice maker modules, not from the water itself.
