North Kirkland range repair, including induction cooktops

North Kirkland's 1970s houses have been remodeled again and again, and many of those remodels added induction cooktops, connected wall ovens and slide-in ranges. We repair those and plain gas and electric ranges in Totem Lake, Juanita, Kingsgate and Finn Hill.

Much of north Kirkland only joined the city recently. Totem Lake was annexed in 1974, and the June 1, 2011 annexation brought in Finn Hill, North Juanita and Kingsgate, about 33,000 residents in one step. The houses there are older than their city addresses: about 37% of Kirkland's homes date from 1960 to 1979, with the 1970s alone accounting for close to a quarter, and another 31% from 1980 to 1999. Those split-levels and ramblers have been through several kitchen updates, and the latest round tends to bring induction cooktops, slide-in induction ranges and wall ovens that talk to a phone app. Northwest University and Lake Washington Institute of Technology add renters to the same part of the city.

Induction cooks by inducing current directly in a magnetic pan, which makes it fast and efficient, and it also packs far more electronics under the glass than a radiant cooktop: power boards, coils, temperature sensors, cooling fans and touch controls. Its failures look different too. Instead of a burner that will not glow, you get a zone that will not recognize the pan, a code on the display, or a cooktop that shuts itself off halfway through dinner. Kirkland splits almost evenly between gas and electric heat, 49% each, so we still repair plenty of gas ranges in Finn Hill and Kingsgate alongside the induction work. Kirkland's water is soft Tolt supply, about 1.43 grains per gallon in the city's 2025 report, so the steam ovens that sometimes arrive with these remodels need only occasional descaling.

Induction and range symptoms in north Kirkland

  • Induction zone beeps and shows a pan symbol

    Likely cause
Cookware not magnetic or too small, or a coil fault
    What we do
Test with a known pan, then the coil and its board
  • Induction cooktop shuts down mid-sear

    Likely cause
Cooling fan blocked or failing, so electronics overheat
    What we do
Clear and test the fan, and check airflow in the cabinet below
  • Two zones on one side are dead

    Likely cause
The power board or fuse feeding them has failed
    What we do
Test that board's supply and output and replace it
  • App says preheated, but the oven is not hot

    Likely cause
Sensor reading wrong or a weakening bake element
    What we do
Test sensor resistance and element current
  • Touch controls switch zones on by themselves

    Likely cause
Moisture on the glass or a failing touch panel
    What we do
Dry the panel, then test and replace the control if needed
  • Gas range in an older Finn Hill house lights slowly

    Likely cause
    Oven igniter losing strength
    What we do
Replace the igniter and check the safety valve

PSE storms, remodel cabinets and Totem Lake apartments

Across Kirkland one company, PSE, delivers both the electricity and the gas, so storms hit everything at once. In the November 2024 bomb cyclone, over 400,000 PSE accounts lost power, and the tall trees in Finn Hill and around Juanita are a regular source of outages. Induction cooktops and electronic ovens dislike power that flickers on and off. After an outage, try switching the cooktop's breaker off for a minute; if an error code persists, we test the boards. For gas, PSE is also the leak line: if you smell gas, leave the home and call 1-888-225-5773 or 911 from outside.

Many north Kirkland remodels set an induction cooktop over a drawer or a wall oven, and the cooktop needs the air gap its installation manual calls for. When a drawer is packed tight underneath, or the cabinet was built without a vent path, the cooling fan cannot do its job and the cooktop overheats and shuts down. We check this whenever a cooktop overheats, because a new board will fail the same way if the airflow problem stays. The same goes for wall ovens set below induction cooktops, which share their heat in a tight cabinet.

About one Kirkland home in five sits in a building of twenty or more units, from the apartments near Totem Lake and EvergreenHealth to downtown. Those kitchens mostly have electric slide-ins. Renters can schedule us directly; we call the property owner or manager with our price and get their approval before we begin.

North Kirkland starting prices

In north Kirkland, range and oven repair starts at $259. Induction and electronic ovens usually come down to the control side, where a range, cooktop or wall oven board, or an induction power board, sits at the upper end of the scale. Radiant or coil elements, switches, burners and oven temperature sensors are the more routine jobs. That is the area starting price, not a quote. Your exact figure is written down after the $85 diagnostic, and the diagnostic is absorbed into it once you approve the repair.

Repairing induction versus replacing it

Induction power boards are the expensive part, so the decision often turns on them. On a cooktop or range under about ten years old, a board replacement is usually worth it, especially when the glass is intact. Older units with a failed board, or units where the glass has also cracked, deserve a careful comparison with new, and we will give you the numbers. Fans, sensors, touch panels and fuses are smaller repairs and almost always worth doing. Remember the cutout too: induction cooktops from different brands use different opening sizes, so a replacement may not drop into the existing counter, and a stone counter can make that costly. Gas ranges in the older Kingsgate and Finn Hill houses follow the familiar rule: igniters, burners and sensors are worth fixing on nearly any sound range. You get both numbers in writing, the repair and a realistic replacement cost, and the choice stays yours.

Common questions

Do you repair induction cooktops from Bosch, Miele, GE Café and LG?

Yes, along with Frigidaire, Samsung, KitchenAid, Thermador and other brands. We diagnose pan-detection problems, error codes, cooling fans, touch controls and power boards, and we repair induction ranges as well as cooktops. Induction boards are usually special-ordered, so the first visit may end with a written price and a parts order.

Why does my induction cooktop say there is no pan?

Most often the cookware is not magnetic enough or is smaller than the zone's minimum. If a magnet does not stick firmly to the bottom of the pan, induction will not work with it. If a known induction pan also fails on one zone, the coil, its sensor or the power board feeding it may have failed.

Do you cover all of north Kirkland?

Yes: Totem Lake, North and South Juanita, Kingsgate, Finn Hill and the surrounding streets, about twenty-one to twenty-six minutes from our shop by I-405 off-peak. When you book in the morning, any day from Monday to Saturday, we can generally fit you in the same day. Commute traffic on I-405 can add time; we call you if it does.

My induction cooktop buzzes or clicks. Is that normal?

Usually, yes. Induction can hum or buzz at high power, especially with multi-layer clad pans, and it often clicks softly as it switches power on low settings. The cooling fan may also keep running for a while after cooking. Loud grinding, a fan that never runs, or buzzing together with error codes are worth a service call.

Will a new induction cooktop fit my existing cutout?

Not always. Cutout dimensions vary by brand and width, and a counter cut for one model may be too small or too large for another. If you are weighing a board repair against a new cooktop, measure the opening or send us the model number, and we will point out any fit issues before you decide.
